Spring Summer 2012 Fashion Trend Report

on 2/8/11

The third of the The Trend Boutique's product trend reports for the Spring Summer 2012 season covers fashion, and accompanies its existing Textile and forthcoming Accessories & Footwear reports for the same season.

Concentrating on a comprehensive mix of designer collections & up-&-coming labels this report aims to provide all the key reference points for the season, as well as inspiration & direction for each theme featured within The Trend Boutique's 'Guide to the Season'.

This report aims to provide a thorough overview from design & print direction through to overall shape & detailing, however although we show clear indication of how we are beginning to see each theme develop, we leave it open for each student or graduate to create their own interpretation.

Covering design & trend influences across the four themes identified by The Trend Boutique for Spring Summer 2012 - Harvest, Intense, Senses & Spirited.

Harvest

Following on from last season's 'Nature' theme where the emphasis was on a sugary, sweet 'hyper-nature', 'Harvest' offers a more gentle, delicate feel as we celebrate the world around us, its beauty & its fragility.

For fashion we see this interpreted through the colour palette used, a delicate update of Summer florals, and soft flowing shapes & silhouettes.

Key elements for this theme are:

  • As you would expect green is seen in every hue, from the softess mint, smudged olives and deep jades

The simmering intensity of the South American continent is felt with full force for fashion in Spring Summer 2012. Following on from the African references of 2010 & 2011 this theme has intense colours, patterns, and dramatic lines at its very heart. This theme is all about a strong, passionate latin approach which sometimes has a sombre veneer.

This theme can be seen for the height of Summer through to early Autumn particularly within eveningwear due to its rich colour palette & dramatic styling.

Key elements of this theme are:

  • Strong statements are created through intensely rich colour palettes & patterning, the level of drama achieved is thanks to this exaggerated sense of sobriety. Follows on from Austere Luxury from Autumn Winter 2011-12.

  • The Latin spirit continues through fiery colour palettes whilst styling references the passionate dances of the Passa Doble & Flamenco

  • A traditional, more conservative Argentina is a key reference point as we continue the ‘womanly’ feel of previous seasons; hidden passion is revealed through the use of crochets & lace over bare flesh or underlays of bolder colours. Focussing on emphasising the figure whilst offering an intriguing glimpse of hidden passion.

  •  Jacquard and tapestry-inspired patterns that hint of an old colonial style add to the more traditional South American influences.

  • Gaucho styling for women is seen through the sharp contrasts between crisp white shirting with high or buttoned-up necklines and cinched in waists worn with jodhpurs or pencil skirts. Footwear & accessories should be in sturdy brown leather to give it that cattle ranch feel.

  • The gaucho spirit is also seen in menswear through richly patterned accessories & casual suiting with sarouel trousers

Key Silhouettes & Shape Detail For Intense:

The Intense theme is ideal for early Spring or late Summer as we see the contrast between crisp shirting and rugged, more robust accessories. Combined with the bold colour palette and Latin American feel this theme shimmers with intensity creating a dramatic statement that is also ideal for sultry evenings.

  • Dramatic  full volume dresses created from with simple belted or tie top seen in bold block colours (see Mary Katrantzou collection)
  • Fitted knitted & bodycon dresses with cut-away sections to reveal shoulders or midriff.  Peplum skirts are exaggerated for the evening with feathers & fringing effects (see Mark Fast & Giles collection)

  • Cinched in waists are accentuated through leather ‘waspie’ / wide belting worn over crisp blouses, where for menswear is interpreted into cumberbands and sashes

  • Pencil & ‘A’ line maxi skirts are de-rigueur are worn with natural leather accessories to give a rugged ranch look

  • Austere & restrained approach is seen through formal blouses with button-up or ruffle necklines & cuffs (see Giles Collection).
  • Fluid jumpsuits are sleeveless to emphasise feeling of ‘fit & flare’ & whilst dresses have a prairie feel with drop waists

Senses

Appealing to all of the 'senses' happens in fashion for Spring Summer 2012 through the use of soft, tactile materials and 'bodycon' dresses and sports-style all-in-ones to create a skin-tight emphasis throughout. The focus is also placed on panelling & laser-cut shapes that offer transparent vs opaque contrasts alongside innovative animal & reptile skin finishes. Strapping and corsetry provides a modern sense of restriction and intrigue developed with an almost couture feel and allowing us to reveal the body's anatomy.

We often under-utilise all of the five 'senses', however for this season we embrace the smell, sound, sight, & touch of each garment

Key elements of this theme are:

  • The 'senses' trend direction sees a further development of the 'bodycon' look of recent seasons through sculpted panelling & sheer contrasts

Key Silhouettes & Shape Detail For Senses:

The 'Senses' theme will provide a perfect direction for high Summer, but will also take you through to early Autumn creating an easy transition into the Autumn Winter 2012-13 'Fragility' trend. Figure hugging all-in-ones are a key shape direction whether inspired by athletic sporting references or offered in more feminine and tactile versions.

  • Sports-couture leggings are given new direction through the use of sheer & opaque panels and intelligent finishes

  • All-in-one sprint suits taken straight from the track bring out our inner athlete with bold digital prints & the heavy use of lycra
  • Bodycon tops & bodies in neutural & pale skintones are updated through the use of tactile panels and tone on tone accessories

  • Lasercutting to reveal bare skin provides a more sophisticated look for simple fit & flare or fitted dresses & skirts

  • Corsetry ditches its boudoir feel as it takes inspiration from anatomical references & provides orthopaedic support through the use of clever craftsmanship

  • Panelling with contrast seaming that accentuates the body is a key direction for this theme through tone on tone palettes and sheer fabrics

Spirited

The digital generation are the inspiration behind this theme as instead of influences being taken from their elders we take references from them instead. So we see a young and very 'spirited' sense of styling with lots of bold use of colour, fun prints & contrasting patterns and playful twists.

Key elements of this theme are:

  • Basic 'school girl' styling provides a sense of simplicity and innocence to everydaywear
  • All-over & double prints provide playful optical

Key Silhouettes & Shape Detail For Spirited:

This upbeat theme can be taken from early Spring through to late Summer by layering & de-layering. Shapes are kept simple with clear early 90's references and a mix & match aesthetic.

  • Dress shapes are kept simple through jersey tee & shirt styling

  • Square retro tee shirts are a key shape for the season for men & womenswear

  • Leggings for both sexes provide a narrow fit to contrast with 'square' upper body and are seen with bold prints & also worn under square shorts for men

  • Narrow-fit sweat bottoms with deep rib are also a key look for menswear and the sporting references continue with toggle finishes on more formal trousers

  • Bomber & double breasted jackets with large rever collars update the varsity jacket and provide a less preppy edge

  • Trousers still have sarouel influences but are tighter & cropped at the knee
